Camino Club: Oak Canyon & Grasslands Loop
Old Mission Dam> Oak Canyon Trail > Grasslands Trail > Old Mission Dam
Begin your walk at the historic Old Mission Dam, a landmark built in the early 1800s to supply water to the San Diego Mission. From here, the trail heads north into Oak Canyon, following a seasonal creek lined with towering oaks and sycamores. This shaded canyon path leads toward Highway 52, offering a peaceful escape filled with birdsong and native chaparral. 🌵🦅
At the canyon’s end, the loop opens into the wide-open Grasslands, where sweeping golden fields stretch toward Cowles Mountain and the Fortuna peaks. The views here capture San Diego’s backcountry beauty, with ever-changing colors from spring wildflowers to golden summer grasses.
Following the Grasslands Loop, the trail gently winds back toward Old Mission Dam, completing a clockwise circuit that blends history, nature, and scenery in one rewarding walk.
With its mix of shady canyon paths and sunlit meadows, this ~4.5-mile loop is dynamic and perfect for walkers of all levels looking to explore the diverse landscapes of Mission Trails Regional Park.
Whether you’re here for history, wildlife, or simply a peaceful escape, the Oak Canyon to Grasslands Loop is a San Diego classic you’ll want to return to again and again.
